asbestos panels

A series of ceramic reliefs depicting a micrograph of the mould spore ‘stachybotrys chartarum’. This specific species is found to grow on asbestos, a toxic material used within domestic and industrial construction.

The ceramics are glazed with a glaze developed from quenched asbestos by designer Benedetta Pompili. We worked together during her tech-fellow residency at the Rijksakademie in 2023.

In this iteration the glazes are a combination of inert, recycled asbestos and recycled glass (crushed up Heineken bottles) mixed to various ratios and fired at different temperatures.
