Filmed at Labre Huis, a former squat turned collective housing project in Utrecht, 'We need to speak about living room', drew on the process of family constellation therapy and roleplay to explore how shared ideals of collective living are formed and sustained, whilst also recognising the tensions, conflicts, and emotional complexities that are present.
The project asks how communal histories are shaped not only by what is recorded and preserved, but also by what remains unresolved, unspoken, or difficult to contain within conventional archival frameworks.
In the film the contemporary context is depicted alongside archival material from historic housing movements in the Netherlands, from seventies squats in Utrecht, to rural anarchist living sites in. The relation between the past and present, brings into dialogue the effects of gentrification and neo-liberalism on how we live today.
