Working closely with the minutes taken from the group’s meetings, moments were developed into scenarios and restaged by members of Slaghammers, a feminist welding collective in Glasgow. Layering and sharing experiences of organising, these segments appeared in Minutes (12mins 30secs), a film newly produced for the exhibition. This sat alongside The House That Jill Built (1998), a film-documentary produced by the Glasgow Film and Video Workshop on the story of Take Root. The metal support in the front space housed the video, whilst suggesting at the former domestic layout of the Victorian terrace house. The film centres around the work of Cathy McCormack, a housing and anti-poverty activist from Easthall in Easterhouse. A collaboration between residents, architects and technical surveyors saw an innovative method to cut the dampness and hi fuel costs that were plaguing the residents. Take Root, a women’s self build group in nineties Glasgow, spent years working towards the dream of building their own homes. They fundraised, learnt to build and negotiated land; they went to training camps and worked directly with architects. The project got close, but was eventually dropped by the housing association. They were set up in 2016 to provide DIY metalwork skills to those who do not feel welcome in traditional workshops spaces. The new site, which will house a metal and wood workshop, will be in a former shipyard in the west of the city. It was made in response to the work of Duchovny and sets up a narrative around the relationship to movement, protest and sexuality, exploring the inherent power dynamics within these positions. The video stills, abstracted from their original forms as views through car windows sit alongside images of heteronormative exchanges. Advertised as a ‘pageant of power’, the festival incorporates over 4,000 re-enactors, military vehicle displays, combat simulations, and living history encampments. The event spans from the ancient world to the Napoleonic era, both World Wars, Vietnam and current day conflict in the Middle East.
